The wippet is one of the smaller sighthounds. They have a certain prey-drive,
they will chase "running" objects (included plastic bags, autumn leaves, the
cat next door..) and they do it fast. You need to have a certain level of
obedience if you are to let your whippet run off leash, but you can never
trust him/her 100%. They are known to be counter-surfers, and you need to puppy/whippet-proof your house quite well. They are the most unbelieveable couch potatoes indoors and quite active outdoors. A very plesant combination. I use to say there's an on/off swich connected to Nimbus - our frond door! They do not need hours and hours of excercise, but they do need to strech their legs a bit every day. The whippet is one of the more trainable sighthounds. That doesn't mean you can't train other sighthounds, or that all whippets are easy to work with. You need to think about the way sighthounds were ment to work - their ability to think for them selves. There is no point forcing them - use positive reinforcement and you can get very far! There really isn't anything the whippet cannot do if you just introduce them to it the right way! |
